About twenty people in Delray Beach, Florida, formed a human shield to protect a man from police who were trying to arrest him for allegedly smoking marijuana last Saturday night.

After police claimed they smelled pot on the man, who was walking down a local street, he ran to a nearby home that was throwing a party.

"They formed this shield and started getting aggressive," Delray Beach Police Sgt. Nicole Guerriero told the Sun Sentinel. "Someone hit the officer and pushed him away, they were throwing bottles, they were cursing and screaming at them."

"The next thing they know, there's 70 to 75 people out there," added Sgt. Guerriero. "The officers had to use pepper spray to get people back."

However, Sgt. Guerriero didn't mention the police officers cursing at the crowd, which was caught on video (below).

According to, four men were arrested and charged with various crimes including obstruction of justice, assault on a law enforcement officer, inciting a riot, possession of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

The Huffington Post reports that 57 percent of Floridians voted to legalize marijuana in November 2014, but the ballot initiative didn't become law because Florida required a 60 percent vote, not just a majority.
