Three people, including the victim’s adult granddaughter, were arrested in South Carolina this week in connection with a home invasion and shooting in Rock Hill.

Wayne Whiteside, who turned 70 on Wednesday, is in fair condition at Carolinas Medical Center after he was shot during a home invasion Saturday.

Authorities arrested Whiteside’s 21-year-old granddaughter Kaylan Elaine Whiteside and 32-year-old Wolfgang William Liewald on on Wednesday. A third suspect, 41-year-old Ben Patrick Smith, was arrested late Tuesday.

Each was charged with attempted murder and first-degree burglary.

Smith has an extensive criminal background, including assault, battery and armed robbery, The State reported.

Liewald served jail time for drug conviction in 2005 and 2008, according to court records.

Kaylan Whiteside has a drug charge from 2013 that was conditionally discharged in June.

The disabled Vietnam War veteran served two tours in Vietnam. Outside his home he flies the American and the Marine Corps flags.

John Wentling, chaplain with the York County chapter of the Olde English Leathernecks Marine Corps League, called Whiteside’s attackers “cowards.” Wentling said he was shocked to learn one of the accused is Whiteside's own granddaughter.
