The Tumbledown Trails Golf Course in Verona, Wis. has swung and missed with its coupon promotion commemorating the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack, which is running for the third year in a row.

The "12th Anniversary of 9-11" golf deal includes 9 holes of golf for $9.11, or 18 holes for $19.11. A Twitter user with the handle "Josh Orton" tweeted a photo of the coupon.

According to, the 9/11 special ran Monday in the Wisconsin State Journal and the company's Facebook page quickly filled with anger.

Tumbledown Trails offered an apology and said it would “donate the $ difference between our normal rate and the previous price for the day to the 9/11 Memorial.”

Apparently, that did not satisfy the wrath of the angry cyber mob.

Tumbledown Trails owner Marc Watts has received death threats from some people who hold 9/11 sacred because of the innocent lives lost.

People have also threatened to burn down the golf course, prompting the local sheriff’s department to send a deputy to guard it today.

“We’re a little hurt by the fact that people are putting such a negative context on this. I thought people would appreciate it.” said Watts.

Lee Ielpi, who is co-founder of the 9/11 Tribute Center and lost a son during 9/11, was not offended.

"I think that any positive event is always beneficial to make sure we remember 9/11. I don't feel slighted by this golf outing," Ielpi told the Associated Press.
