The bizarre saga of George Zimmerman which someday may make the subject of a Great American Novel, or better yet, a reality show, took another weird turn yesterday when the acquitted killer of Trayvon Martin was released after being held after a domestic violence report from his wife.

Zimmerman (pictured, with beard and baseball cap) became a national figure after he shot and killed Martin, an unarmed, African-American 17-year-old, in February 0f 2012. In June of this year, he was acquitted of all charges after a trial that drew worldwide attention.

On Monday, Zimmerman’s estranged wife, Shellie, placed an emergency 911 call in which, frantic and sobbing, she told the dispatcher that Zimmerman was threatening her with a gun.

"I'm really, really afraid. I don't know what he's capable of,” Shellie Zimmerman, who filed for divorce from her husband last week, is heard sobbing on the call. "He's just threatening all of us with his firearm, and he's gonna shoot us. He punched my dad in the nose. My dad has a mark on his face."

She also says that Zimmerman smashed her iPad. She can be heard on the call telling her father to get inside the house.

"George might start shooting at us, I don't know,” she says, before sobbing, “Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!”

But when police descended on the home in Lake Mary, Fla., from which Shellie Zimmerman made her desperate call, she told police that she never saw Zimmerman with a gun. Police did not find a gun on Zimmerman’s person, they said.

Neither Shellie nor her father, despite allegedly being punched by Zimmerman, wanted to press charges.

Prosecutors could still bring a case against Zimmerman if surveillance video around the house appears to verify that Zimmerman was threatening his wife and father-in-law, but they have not said whether they plan to proceed with the case.

In an interview last week explaining why she was divorcing the 29-year-old Zimmerman, Shellie, 26, said, “I have a selfish husband and I think George is all about George.”
