An Ohio man managed to elude police during a pursuit but was later arrested when he returned to the crime scene to look for his lost hat.

The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday when an officer tried to stop Otha Montgomery, 18, for running a red light in Eastlake, according to Police said Montgomery sped up and turned the corner. He then pulled into a driveway and ran away.

A man in the passenger’s seat of the vehicle gave police the suspect’s description, including a baseball cap he was wearing, according to reports.

Investigators stopped a man, later identified as Montgomery, and he told them that he was walking to a friend’s house. He was not arrested at that time.

The suspect then reportedly returned to the exact scene where the pursuit ended and gave officers a detailed description of the hat he was looking for.

The good news for Montgomery is that officers were able to find his hat in a flowerbed. The bad news is that they arrested him.

Police said Montgomery denied being the driver. However, back at the police station, he called a friend and told the story of the pursuit. He is detained at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on a $3,500 bond.

The 18-year-old is now facing charges of failing to comply with a police order, obstructing official business, and various traffic violations. He pleaded not guilty in Willoughby Municipal Court Wednesday and is scheduled to return to court on May 26.
