Fox News used a recent report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), an anti-immigrant group, to claim that President Obama was turning loose undocumented immigrant rapists and murderers on the American people.
In reality, undocumented immigrants that are convicted of rape and murder (Level 1 offenses) are automatically deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), notes MediaMatters.org.
The CIS claimed that ICE freed almost 68,000 immigrants who had been convicted of some kind of crime, but the CIS didn't actually state what those crimes were.
On "Fox & Friends" this week, co-host Steve Doocy decided to fill in the blanks with his imagination (video below).
"That's kind of scary that we released close to 70,000 people who had criminal convictions," said Doocy.
"I know some of them were drunk driving, but they did include murder in some cases and rape as well," claimed Doocy. "That's not the way it's supposed to work."
Ironically, Doocy's guest Jessica Vaughan, of CIS, replied: "Well, ICE has not released all the details on the exact crimes that these people are associated with, but it is concerning that interior immigration enforcement has deteriorated."
According to The Washington Post, the Obama administration is considering a new proposal that would give judges more discretion when it comes to deporting immigrants for minor crimes, not violent felonies such as rape and murder.
The Obama administration has deported far more undocumented immigrants than the Bush administration did in its day, noted Forbes.
