A baby has been left in a vegetative state after suffering abuse from his father, a former police officer in North Carolina, according to York County Solicitor Kevin Brackett.
The father, Robert Jeffrey Taylor, 45, appeared in court recently on charges of child neglect and abuse. His bail had been set at $100,000 though his attorney, Jim Boyd, lobbied for $20,000 bail.
According to Brackett, the 3-month-old baby boy currently sits in a hospital with retinal hemorrhage and bruising on his neck. He also noted that the baby is in a vegetative state with severe brain damage and will not likely recover.
“The retinal hemorrhaging could only be caused by either shaking, severe, like in a shaken baby syndrome. Like, head whipping back and forth or a significant fall,” Brackett stated. “They found some bruising on the child which obviously at eight weeks, the child can't bruise themselves."
“A few weeks ago, he could have walked into this courthouse carrying a gun and nobody would have thought anything of it,” Boyd added.
Taylor left his job on the force a few days before he was arrested. The police department placed him on administrative leave since the incident with his son.
The baby's mother, Audrey Schurig, 36, was also arrested and charged with unlawful neglect of a child.
The prosecutor claimed that Schurig was aware that Taylor was beating the baby but still left him in his care.
She is also a former police officer.
The couple was arrested at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, where their child is being treated.
As of the time this was written, the baby was still in the hospital and is under the custody of DSS.
