A Florida court sentenced 38-year-old Christopher Serna to 50 years in prison Friday for the murder of his girlfriend.

In 2011, Serna allegedly killed Suzanne Bishop and mutilated her body. Bishop was 45 at the time of her death.

The couple had only been living together for a few months when police officers arrived at Serna’s apartment to find Bishop’s head on a metal spike, and Serna covered in blood.

Serna pleaded guilty to the charge in court.

“This saved the family from having to relive the case and hear again what he did to her," Samantha Syoen, a spokeswoman for the state attorney’s office, commented to News-Press. "In many people's eyes, this is virtually a life sentence."

Proving Serna’s guilt could have involved displaying pictures and hearing accounts from the officers who went to Serna’s apartment on July 26, 2011.

The officers who responded to the 911 call from Serna’s parents found Serna unable to speak in his apartment with the spiked head nearby. The floor was covered in blood and Bishop’s body was located in the bedroom.

Investigators took three days to examine the evidence at the crime scene, which included several bloodied knives, a baseball bat and clothing.

Serna, who worked as a maintenance worker at the time, had been acting strangely prior to Bishop’s death, colleagues claimed. Earlier indications were that Serna’s attorneys had considered using a plea of insanity in his defense, according to News-Press.

Other comments from witnesses revealed that Serna had been drinking heavily the day before he called his parents on July 26 at 4 a.m. to say that something was wrong. According to NBC-2, his parents could not gain entry to Serna’s apartment when they arrived to see what was wrong, leading them to call the police.
