Florida Man Goes On Murder-Suicide Rampage, Killing His Daughter, Six Grandkids, Himself

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

A Florida grandfather allegedly shot and killed his adult daughter and her six children before turning the gun on himself in a grisly murder suicide Thursday.

It is unclear what caused Don Spirit, 51, to go on a rampage, according to Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert Schultz. He called 911 to say he had “injured someone” at his home in Bell, a rural town of 350 located about 35 miles west of Gainesville.

Authorities found the remains of his daughter, 28-year-old Sarah Spirit and her six children, ages 3 months to 10 years.

Don Spirit shot himself inside the home after a deputy arrived.

"Pray for the families and the community," Schultz said. "The poor children tomorrow when they go to school, they're going to have to deal with this."

Schultz said Spirit had a criminal history and that authorities had responded to 911 call at his residence in the past but did not elaborate.

According to the New York Daily News, he might be the same Don Spirit who in 2003 pleaded guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm in the accidental shooting death of his 8-year-old son. After the death, the family moved to Bell, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
