A Florida would-be robber was taken to the hospital Thursday after the people he attempted to rob fought back.

The Fort Myers Police Department responded to a call around 1 p.m. about a robbery at Majorca Pals Drive, where officers found Adrian Mangual-Ayala, 16, of Fort Myers, being forcefully restrained on the ground by two victims, the Fort Myers News-Press reports.

Mangual-Ayala had asked the two victims cashing a check at a Penny Saver supermarket for a ride home, according to reports.

The victims agreed and let the teen ride in the backseat of their red Oldsmobile.

As they were driving, Mangual-Ayala took out a firearm, put it to the driver’s head demanded money, and threatened to kill the victims.

The driver threw money at Mangual-Ayala while the passenger jumped into the backseat to disarm him, police say. A struggle continued between the teen and the passenger outside of the car and Mangual-Ayala was restrained until police arrived.

The suspect was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital where he was treated, released and arrested.

Mangual-Ayala faces charges of two counts of robbery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm for somebody under the age of 18. He was also charged with violating probation, according to NBC2 News.

“This was a scary situation and we are glad the victims weren’t seriously injured” Police Spokesman Lieutenant Victor Medico said. “We understand the victims were just trying to be good citizens but we’d like to remind everyone of the dangers associated with strangers.”
