A female patient is accusing a reputable New York doctor of ejaculating in her face after giving her morphine.
Considered a prominent advocate for health care reforms, 45-year-old emergency physician and Iraq War veteran Dr. David Newman is under investigation, New York Daily News reports.
“We are aware of an allegation that has been made against one of our physicians,” Mount Sinai Hospital, where Newman works, said. “This is a matter under investigation and we are fully cooperating with the appropriate authorities. We take this matter very seriously and are conducting our own internal investigation.”
Although detectives have questioned Newman, he has not been taken into custody. He is currently not allowed to see patients, reports New York Daily News.
The 22-year-old said she visited Newman on Jan. 11 for pain in her shoulder and was taken to a private room.
There, nurses reportedly gave her morphine and advised she change into a gown while they took X-rays. The woman says she was only wearing her pants and the gown when Newman entered the room.
“I’m going to give you a shot of morphine,” the doctor reportedly said, even though the nurses had also already given the woman the drug.
The patient allegedly tried to tell him this, but quickly felt a burning sensation in her arm that she believes was Newman administering the morphine anyway.
Soon after, the patient explained she was experiencing pain on the right side of her chest.
Newman allegedly began fondling the woman’s breasts and later turned his back away from her. It was at that point the woman says she believes she heard Newman masturbating, before feeling what she thinks was semen on her face. Later, she said she felt Newman wiping it off with a blanket.
Because she was heavily medicated, she says she could not move.
“What is wrong with her? Why is she like this?” she eventually heard a nurse ask a staffer upon finding the woman in a blacked-out state, one source explained.
When the woman was conscious, she said saw the semen on her and placed it in a plastic bag as evidence.
Although Newman admits to masturbating, he denies assaulting the woman.
“I am embarrassed because I [masturbated] in the lounge, and it was possible that that the ejaculate may have gone from my hands to the woman’s blanket,” Newman said. “Semen may have also transferred from my hand to her face during the time I treated her.”
