On Feb. 7, correction officer Nicole Bartley was charged with rape and conspiring to traffic marijuana into the Rikers Island jail in New York City after reportedly falling in love with an inmate.

Bartley, 30, told police that the inmate tricked her into a romantic relationship, the New York Daily News reports.

“I, Nicole, being a fool had my guard down to this man I thought (I) was falling in love with,” she said, according to the criminal complaint obtained by the Daily News.

"I was in love with him," she added. "He used me and played me like a fool. I had sex with him on one occasion in the jail a few days before Jan. 30."

Bartley added that she used a condom and that the sexual encounter occurred in the morning before everyone else was locked in. On Feb. 6, Bartley was arrested at her home in the Bronx, and police discovered 70 grams of marijuana in her possession. She reportedly said she intended to give the drugs to her inmate lover.

Bartley was released on $1,000 bail and faces up to four years in prison for her third-degree rape charge. The act was considered rape since inmates cannot legally consent to sex.

A woman who identified herself as Bartley’s aunt said the allegations are likely false and fabricated by someone else, like an inmate.

“It’s ridiculous,” the woman told the Daily News. “That’s very far fetched.”

Bartley’s aunt described her niece as a kind person with a kind heart.

Bartley has since been suspended from the Department of Corrections.
