As the News Herald of Panama City reports, Ayers’ family had come together on Tuesday to celebrate the 3-day-old child’s homecoming.

The 33-year-old man was struck in the back of the head by a stray bullet. He died at the scene.

Arrest reports state that Ayers’ neighbor, 62-year-old Charles Edward Shisler, had been on his porch, where he picked up a loaded 9mm pistol.

Shisler admitted to authorities that he accidentally discharged the pistol. He was arrested and charged with manslaughter, and with posession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“The damn gun doesn’t usually shoot,” Shisler allegedly told officers. “You have to squeeze the hell out of the trigger to shoot it.”

The neighbor had a previous felony conviction for carrying a concealed firearm.

Ayers was a musician who taught guitar lessons and played at venues throughout the Panhandle.
