A California man was arrested after his alleged attempt to kidnap a 3-year-old girl was foiled by family members who chased him down and tackled him.
The man reportedly got to the girl through her bedroom window at the family’s home in Santa Clarita, California. Authorities said the kidnapper was able to gain access to the girl by “breaking out a window screen.”
After instructing her to “come toward him,” the kidnapper reportedly began to leave the property with the girl. Family members witnessed the attempted kidnapping minutes later, and the girl’s father and uncle began chasing the alleged abductor down the street.
“I actually … ran behind him,” the girl’s uncle said. “I think he heard my footsteps and then he turned around quickly and asked me if this was my daughter.” The man then reportedly handed the toddler over to her uncle.
After returning the child, the man reportedly attempted to run away but was tackled by the father and restrained until police arrived. He was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and is currently in custody.
“We didn’t think this would ever happen to her or us,” the girl’s aunt said.
The identities of those involved have not been released, but authorities called the kidnapping “random” and said there was no connection between the family and the abductor.
