A Texas man will remain in jail after an autopsy revealed he sexually assaulted his girlfriend’s son, who died of blunt force trauma.
Chet Shelton, 27, was arrested on Jan. 17 on an aggravated sexual assault warrant, KWTX reported. The charge stemmed from the death of 2-year-old Makai Brooks Lamar, the son of Shelton’s girlfriend.
On Jan. 13, police responded to a call at the Gatesville home and found the child unresponsive. Lamar was rushed to Coryell Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy revealed that Lamar died of blunt force trauma, police said.
“Additionally the child had been sexually assaulted, causing severe distinct trauma,” Coryell County District Attorney Dusty Boyd said in a press release. “The child had been in the care, custody and control of Chet Shelton throughout the day as his girlfriend and mother of the child was at work.”
Shelton’s bond is now set at $500,000, KCEN-TV reported. Shelton had previously served time for injury to a child and was released on parole.
