Washington police said a man attempted to kill his 4-year-old son by injecting him with heroin over a divorce dispute with the boy’s mother.

Eric Lehtinen, 37, was found by his estranged wife lying unconscious on Tuesday, the same day his divorce was supposed to be finalized, the Seattle Post Intelligencer reported. She removed a blanket beside him and found their son, who had a needle filled with heroin on his chest, according to court documents.

First responders were unable to revive Lehtinen or the 4-year-old. Both were hospitalized.

Lehtinen has since been discharged and arrested. He is charged with attempted murder.

The boy is still hospitalized at Seattle Children’s. Investigators found puncture marks on his neck and buttocks. Authorities said they aren’t sure whether the drug overdose has left any long-term damage.

The boy was injected with a coctail of drugs, including heroin, morphine, codeine, ketamine – an anesthetic used in veterinary medicine.

Prosecutors said a "man who is willing to inject his 4-year-old son with heroin in an attempt to kill the boy is a "dangerous man willing to do anything."

Lehtinen’s bond was set at $3 million. If convicted he would face at least 15 years in prison.

Ten days before the incident, the boy had been living in San Francisco with his mother. She let the boy stay with Lehtinen while she went on a job interview in Seattle, however she had wanted the divorce finalization to include a drug test. Married to Lehtinen for six years, the mother told police he is known to use heroin and ketamine.

Court documents show Lehtinen had a history of drug use and overdoses. He was involuntarily committed by police in 2005 when he attempt to kill himself with scissors while he was withdrawing from heroin.
