Authorities have identified Jeffrey Johnson, 53, as the man who went on a mass shooting rampage outside of the Empire State Building early Friday morning.

According to CNN, Johnson killed two people and injured multiple others before he was shot to death by police (video below).

One of the victims was a former coworker of Johnson's at Hazan Imports. Johnson worked as  a designer of women's accessories until he was laid off last year.

When Johnson ran from the scene of the crime, a construction worker alerted two police officers, who followed Johnson up West 33rd Street. When Johnson pulled a .45 caliber gun, the police officers opened fire, killing him.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg praised the NYPD this morning: "There is no doubt that the situation would've been even more tragic except for the extraordinary acts of heroism. New York City is the safest big city in this country but we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence."
