| by Emily Smith

A Utah attacker was caught off guard after getting punched in the head by an elderly woman he attempted to carjack on Saturday.

Christopher Bigler reportedly attempted to carjack 69-year-old Saratoga Springs resident Frances Mach’s car as she arrived at her daughter’s home.

“He says ‘take me out of here … go!’” Mach told KUTV. “He started to reach for the steering wheel and he smacked me with the other hand and said ‘go!’”

Instead of following Bigler’s orders, Mach fought back with her fists. She allegedly hit Bigler in the head about three or four times and demanded that he leave her car. Bigler exited the car and ran inside Mach’s daughter’s home, the New York Daily News reports.

Once inside, Bigler reportedly started a fire upstairs. When police arrived on the scene, they were able to clear the downstairs portion of the home but had difficulties clearing the upstairs because of the heavy smoke. However, officers were eventually able to detain Bigler.

Bigler was taken to a hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation and injuries from Mach’s defense punches.

“He couldn’t believe it, I’ll tell you what, because I fought back. He looked about half scared,” Mach said. “They told me his face was already starting to swell, so I must have landed him pretty good.”

On Sunday, it was reported that Bigler was in stable condition. The home in which he started the fire, however, was badly damaged. The family has not been permitted to enter the home as of Sunday.

According to authorities, Bigler was a stranger to the family.
