A Connecticut couple is accused of disciplining their child with an electric shock collar, WABC reports.
Eduardo Montanez, 43, and his wife Paula, 34, are due in court Wednesday after putting the collar on a nine-year-old girl. The couple was upset with the girl’s performance in school when they forced her bark like a dog so the collar would shock her, investigators say.
The couple was arrested Tuesday after a Danbury school employee contacted the state Department of Children and Families in regards to suspected child abuse. Authorities say Eduardo Montanez is the stepfather of the nine-year-old girl.
Paula Montanez, the girl’s mother, was reportedly present when it happened and did nothing to stop the abuse, police said.
The victim told police the shock collar incident had only happened once, but marks on her neck indicated it might have occurred more often, NBC Connecticut reports. The girl also said the couple had beaten her several times.
Montanez’s defense attorney said there is substantial evidence that the girl is making up the abuse allegations for attention.
Eduardo Montanez is being held on $250,000 bond on charges including third-degree assault, risk of injury to a child and cruelty.
Paula Montanez is held on $200,000 bond on charges including risk of injury to a child, conspiracy to commit third-degree assault and conspiracy to commit cruelty. If she makes bail, police say there is a “no contact” order for her three minor children.
