Detroit police were almost shot when they staged a purse snatching at a gas station frequented by FBI agents on Wednesday (video below).
An off-duty FBI agent witnessed the fake robbery and began chasing the plain-clothed police officer.
It is not clear whether the police officers had permission from their superiors to stage the fake purse snatching.
“He pulls his weapon, and as he turns the corner around the gas station, he’s stopped by another officer, who identifies herself as a police officer and don’t shoot, don’t shoot, this is a scenario,” said Police Inspector Shawn Gargalino (pictured) to My Fox Detroit.
“You had citizens who could’ve been hurt," Gargalino said. "A lot of people out here have CPLs now and carry weapons. They’re tired of the crime that’s going on in Detroit, and they might want to stand up and help somebody that’s in this type of situation. It just so happened it’s a gas station where the FBI fills up all their vehicles.”
“Most people aren’t going to assume it’s a mock robbery,” said Lieutenant Chuck Flannagan.
NBC affiliate WDIV-TV was invited to film the purse snatching but did not report the incident on its newscast.
