When mother Jessica Lewis arrived at Prince and Princess Playdate Daycare in Havelock, Connecticut, the doors were reportedly locked - with eight children inside.

"When my son got to the window I said, 'where's your teacher,'" Lewis told WTVD. "He said she wasn't there, she had left to pick up the other kids.”

Lewis called the police, and the facility’s owner, Danika Edwards, arrived 15 minutes later and told authorities that she left because her mother was having a heart attack, which authorities later determined was a lie. The daycare operation was also unlicensed and Edwards is now facing charges of running an illegal daycare as well as child abuse charges.

It is unclear how long the children, who ranged in age from 7 years old to 11 months, were alone.

In a separate interview with WNCT, Lewis said she didn’t know the daycare was illegal.

“You never once said your child can only stay for four hours, we’re only a drop-in, you offered meals, you know, those things," she said. "So I was definitely under the impression that it was a full-time daycare."

Police are hoping other parents who have used the facility will come forward throughout the course of their investigation.
