A Staten Island grand jury has decided not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the death of Eric Garner, according to the New York Post.
Garner died on July 17 during a violent arrest stemming from his illegally selling loose cigarettes. Witnesses captured the entire altercation on video (below), and it shows Officer Pantaleo putting Garner into the chokehold that would ultimately result in his death.
A medical examiner ruled that Garner’s death was a homicide, and that it was caused by “compression of the neck, compression of chest and prone positioning during restraint.”
In anticipation of this announcement, NYPD officials warned that any crimes that came as a result of the grand jury’s decision would be met with strict punishment.
