An Ohio father has been sentenced to death for murdering his 2-year-old daughter, Glenara, by starving and beating her to death.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Megan Shanahan sentenced Glen Bates, 34, to death for aggravated murder at the jury’s recommendation.
Bates appeared to show no emotions during the verdict, reports Cincinnati.com. However, Bates was found to have an IQ of 67, below the requirement for the death penalty.
Glenara’s 10-year-old sister testified that she witnessed Bates dangle the 2-year-old by the legs and knock her head against a wall until she stopped crying.

Bates physically abused the toddler before the incident that killed her. Prosecutors say they found several bites, scratches and bruises all over Glenara's body, according to WCPO. There was even a laceration on her forehead that was held together by sewing thread.
"Imagine him swinging her around," the prosecution said at Bates' sentencing hearing. "Tell me he's not a monster."
Dr. Jennifer Schott, the coroner who performed the medical examination, said Glenara’s death is “one of the worst I’ve ever seen.”
Glenara was often forced to sleep downstairs in a bathtub because of her bed-wetting problem. Schott emphasized the acute diaper rash that stretched from Glenara’s lower back to her thighs.

She weighed a mere 13 pounds when she died, less than half the average weight of a normal 2-year-old child.
“This man is a murderer who needs to pay for what he did to this innocent baby," Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said in a statement released after the sentence. "My heart breaks for this little girl. She died in one of the most horrific ways imaginable."
Stacey Jones, the mother of Bates’ 12-year-old son, told the court, “My son would be devastated if his dad died. You can’t have another father."
Glenara’s mother and Bates' former girlfriend, Andrea Bradley, 30, also faces charges that could result in a death sentence. However, Bradley’s case is being handled separately.
Bradley has six other children, all of whom are either in the custody of relatives or at foster homes. Bates is the father of three of her children, according to Cincinnati.com.
Bradley refused to take the plea deal that would have given her 15 years in prison -- a decision that means her case will head to trial.
