Couple Recounts Violent Home Invasion Robbery

| by Amanda Andrade-Rhoades

An Atlanta man was shot during an apparent home invasion robbery while his wife and two children were in the house.

Mike and Whitney Lash and their two children had just returned home from their vacation when they heard a knock at the door on Aug. 16, reports ABC News. Two men told Mike they were having car trouble just down the street from their Atlanta, Georgia, home and said they needed a jack.

Whitney sensed something was amiss.

“I had a feeling that it was an excuse and we were about to be robbed," she told ABC News. "Right about that moment I saw them pull the gun on Mike."

Whitney says she grabbed her 6-month-old daughter, Lucy, ran out the back door, and called 911 while the robbers shot Mike three times. He was shot in both legs.

The couple’s 2-year-old son, Everson, napped upstairs while the robbers — who were joined by two others — reportedly began ransacking their home.

Mike said he prayed aloud during the incident.

“Lord, this is, I guess, the moment I will meet you today … if it is not your will, I am ready to stay,” he recalled saying at the time.

“It just went like a silent movie," he added. "They started walking in and I remember them coming in and out multiple times, just bringing stuff from our house."

One of the robbers ran after Whitney and took her phone, but she and her daughter were not harmed, reports NY Daily News. Everson slept through the whole thing.

With the help of a police sketch (shown below), authorities arrested 18-year-old Brandon Jerome Smith, who has since been charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault, NY Daily News reported.

Mike underwent emergency surgery on his legs and is expected to make a full recovery.
