Casey Anthony Speaks: 'I Sleep Pretty Good At Night'

| by Kathryn Schroeder

Casey Anthony, the mother who was acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter almost nine years ago, says she doesn't know what happened to Caylee in her final hours.

"Everyone has their theories, I don't know. As I stand here today I can't tell you one way or another. The last time I saw my daughter I believed she was alive and was going to be OK, and that's what was told to me," Anthony told The Associated Press.

Caylee went missing almost nine years ago, and it has been six since Anthony was acquitted of a murder charge which earned her "the most hated mom in America" title from HLN's Nancy Grace.

June 16, 2008, was supposedly the last day Caylee was seen. She was reported missing by Anthony on July 15, and one day later the now 30-year-old mother was arrested on charges of child neglect. Anthony told police that her daughter had disappeared with a babysitter.

On Dec. 11, 2008, Caylee's skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near Anthony's home, and experts testified that samples from Anthony's trunk indicated decaying human remains had been present. But it was never determined how Caylee died, and Anthony's DNA was not found on the duct tape prosecutors said was used to suffocate the child. Anthony was found not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, and aggravated child abuse.

Members of the public still believe Anthony murdered Caylee, and are bothered that she told the AP, "I'm OK with myself, I sleep pretty good at night."

"If u did not kill your daughter as u claim, and the killer is still out there, I'm curious how u sleep so well at night?" one Twitter user said.

"I don't care what anyone tells me I still think Casey Anthony killed her child and got away with it," another user wrote.

"Casey Anthony most definitely killed her daughter. & even if she didn't, how could she sleep @ night knowing the killer is still out there?" a third user tweeted.

Anthony believes she was found guilty by the public before her trial was complete.

"The queen is proclaiming: 'No, no, sentence first, verdict afterward,'" she told the AP, comparing herself to "Alice in Wonderland," with the public as the Red Queen. "I sense and feel to this day that is a direct parallel to what I lived. My sentence was doled out long before there was a verdict. Sentence first, verdict afterward. People found me guilty long before I had my day in court."

Anthony was found guilty of lying to police, and served approximately three years in prison while awaiting trial. Former Circuit Judge Belvin Perry Jr., who presided over her trial, thinks she may have killed Caylee accidentally while using chloroform to calm her.

Anthony admits to lying to police about major details in the case, such as Caylee being with a babysitter, but does not think being honest would have changed anything.

"Even if I would've told [police] everything that I told to the psychologist, I hate to say this but I firmly believe I would have been in the same place. Because cops believe other cops. Cops tend to victimize the victims. I understand now ... I see why I was treated the way I was even had I been completely truthful," she said.

"Cops lie to people every day. I'm just one of the unfortunate idiots who admitted they lied," Anthony added.

Anthony lives in South Florida, her room covered with photos of Caylee and the child's artwork, and works for the private investigator that was on her defense team. She has an idea of what Caylee would be like today.

"Caylee would be 12 right now. And would be a total badass," Anthony said. "I'd like to think she'd be listening to classic rock, playing sports [and putting up with no nonsense.]"
