A Long Beach, Calif., teacher was stabbed to death in front of her students at an area park on Friday and police have arrested the father of her grandchildren.
KABC reports that Kellye Taylor was sitting in a park across the street from the elementary school she worked at and was watching her students play when a man suddenly walked up and stabbed her in front of the children, according to police.
Some of the children ran back to the school to tell Pamela Huffman, Taylor’s younger sister, what had happened. Huffman hurried to the park and tried to help her sister.
“How could they do something like this in front of these babies?” Huffman told the Press Telegram. “All I could do was run to her. I saw her slip away. I knew she wasn’t going to make it.”

Witnesses pointed out the suspect and police captured him a few blocks from the park. He has been identified as 50-year-old Steven Brown and is being held on $1 million bail.
Taylor was the grandmother of Brown’s four children and had custody of them, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The 53-year-old Taylor was the second oldest of five sisters. Her close-knit family is devastated by her murder.
“She loved children, and she loved being around children,” said Vanessa Kelly, the victim’s sister. “She loved teaching children, and that’s what she did.”

The school will reportedly remain closed until Thursday to give staff and students a chance to heal from what took place Friday.
