British man Craig Carth was sentenced to 13 years in jail after he punched a 4-year-old girl so hard she spent days in the hospital fighting for her life.

The victim was originally rushed to St. George’s Hospital in Tooting after her mother called emergency services and reported that the girl was vomiting. She was found to have two holes in the front wall of her intestine, which investigators attributed to a blow to the abdomen during an attack within 48 hours of the emergency call.

The child remained in intensive care for several days, but has since made a full recovery.

Carth was arrested and charged, then found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm following a three-week trial at Kingston Crown Court. One other man and two women were also arrested in connection with the investigation, but all denied having any knowledge of how the child was injured and were found not guilty.

“Officers from the Child Abuse Investigation Team conducted a thorough investigation, dealing with a very young, vulnerable child,” Detective Sergeant Tariq Farooqi said. “We will continue to investigate every allegation of child abuse professionally in order to bring this type of dangerous offender to justice."

Farooqi added that he was pleased with Carth’s sentence and thanked the staff at St. George’s Hospital for helping the young girl make a full recovery.
