Closing arguments have been read in the case of a California couple accused of murdering and torturing their 2-year-old child.
Brandon Williams, 27, and Rosie Wilson, 23, are on trial in Palmdale for first-degree murder and torture of Wilson's 2-year-old son, Anthony, KABC reports.
"Was defendant Williams crying when he tortured, punched Anthony into a vegetative state?" asked Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami during the trial. Williams admitted he had hit the toddler five times in the head before Anthony was hospitalized in 2014.
According to Hatami, the child had been beaten three weeks earlier, and his parents did not take him to receive medical treatment for his injuries.

"Anthony was in his crib with his brain swelling and bleeding and nobody was caring for Anthony. Nobody was there for Anthony," Hatami said.
The toddler was in a vegetative state for over a month before he died. According to the defense, Williams had not intended to kill the child, but the prosecution argued that Williams had been jealous of Anthony and was unhappy in his relationship with Wilson.
"He intended to do that," argued the prosecutor. "He intended to do it for revenge to get back at Rosie."
The couple could face life sentences if they are convicted.

In another case that left a 2-year-old dead, a man allegedly performed WWE wrestling moves on a little girl, leaving her with traumatic injuries that led to her death, International Business Times reports.
Richard Gamache Jr., 24, was arrested in Jefferson County, Missouri, for abuse and neglect of a child after the incident that left 2-year-old Addie with serious injuries that caused her to have a seizure and die. The girl's mother, 19-year-old Cheyenne Cook, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Gamache, Cook's boyfriend, reportedly carried out wrestling moves on the toddler, including the "Batista Bomb." The man allegedly sent Cook photos of bruises on Addie's forehead and face on May 13, as well as text messages suggesting that the bruises came from "playing too rough" with the young girl.
"It's insane how rough I am with her," Gamache texted to Cook, according to KMOV.
The WWE released a statement condemning Gamache's actions and calling for punishment.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic death and hope that the guilty parties are brought to justice," said the statement. "There is no excuse or justification for the brutal and ultimately fatal beating of a 2-year-old child by a grown man. This is a clear case of criminal intent and a lack of parental supervision."
