Autopsy Report Says Chavis Carter Killed Himself with Gun

| by Michael Allen

An autopsy report released, on Monday, backed up claims made by Arkansas police officers that Chavis Carter shot himself in the head, despite being handcuffed in the back seat of a police car, reports the Associated Press.

The autopsy report read: “He was cuffed and placed into a police car, where apparently he produced a weapon, and despite being handcuffed, shot himself in the head. At the time of discharge, the muzzle of the gun was placed against the right temporal scalp.”

Last month, Carter was arrested for an outstanding warrant and possession of pot. He was frisked, handcuffed, frisked again and placed in the back seat of a police car.

Officers said they heard a thump and found Carter with a gunshot wound to the head. Carter later died at a hospital.

A dashcam video, released later by police, ended before the suicide and provided no additional clues.

At the time of Carter's death, his mother told WREG-TV: “I think they killed him, my son wasn’t suicidal."

Benjamin Irwin, an attorney who represents the Carter family, told the Associated Press: “There’s still nothing in there about what actually happened with Chavis."
