The Cleveland man charged with holding three women captive in his home for over a decade has been placed on suicide watch amid a bizarre string of jailhouse behavior.
Ariel Castro, 52, has been stripping naked and using strings from a floor mat as dental floss, according to logs obtained by the Associated Press. As a result, guards have been ordered to check on the former bus driver, who’s currently being held in lieu of $8 million bond.
TV stations reported two guards at the Cuyahoga County Jail’s response team have been instructed to escort Castro whenever he’s removed from his cell. When not exhibiting bizarre behavior, Castro generally just sleeps or stares at the bunk above him.
He reportedly refused to take a shower on Sunday because of a headache and initially complained of being cold when first brought to the jail.
He currently isn’t allowed personal visitors or phone calls.
Castro was arrested on May 6 after neighbor Charles Ramsey noticed what appeared to be a woman in distress trapped inside Castro’s home. Ramsey was ultimately able to free the woman – who later turned out to be Amanda Berry, a Cleveland woman who was abducted as a teenager back in 2003.
Berry quickly informed responding officers that two other women were imprisoned in the home. They later turned out to be Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus, who were also abducted by Castro in the early 2000s.
Castro is currently facing rape and kidnapping charges. Prosecutors have stated they also plan to include aggravated murder charges to that list as well.
