After receiving a phone call from an 8-year-old girl shortly before dawn on Monday morning, police arrived at a California home and found Jennifer Kimble shot dead and her sister, Valerie Alvarez, critically wounded.
The alleged shooter, their father, 63-year-old Anthony Alvarez, was dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Kimble’s three children, two boys ages 13 and 11, and the 8-year-old girl who called authorities, were all in the home.
Kimble, 37, was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. Valerie had at least one gunshot wound and was flown to a Fresno hospital in critical condition. According to Tulare County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Sgt. Chris Douglass, she was stabilized and had surgery.
The investigation into the shootings is ongoing and autopsies were planned for later in the week. Police have not released information about a possible motive at this time, USA Today reported.
Douglass said investigators were confident that Anthony had shot his daughters and then decided to use the gun on himself.
"It's a very cut-and-dried case," she said. "We do have to sit down and talk with the children who were at home at the time of the incident because it did happen at such an early hour."
Neighbors of the family say that Anthony was a Vietnam veteran which makes the fact that this horrible incident happened on Memorial Day that much more of a surprise.
The three children are now with their father.
