The online hacktivist group Anonymous has promised to take down Facebook on Guy Fawkes Day, which is celebrated in Britain on November 5th to commemorate a plot to blow up the British House of Lords in 1605.
"Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed," says a speaker representing Anonymous in a video (below) posted on YouTube. Members of Anonymous often wear Guy Fawkes-inspired masks that parrot the graphic novel V is for Vendetta, written by popular British author Alan Moore.
While this might sound like an empty threat, Anonymous has been successful in taking down websites operated by PayPal, Master Card, Visa and the Church of Scientology.
Why is Facebook being targeted?
Anonymous says Facebook is "selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world." There has been no official statement from Facebook.
