American Student Alexander Hamilton Accused of Giving Classmate Methanol-Laced Wine

| by

A 21-year-old student was arrested last week for allegedly encouraging his classmate to drink poisoned wine.

The poisoning incident reportedly occurred in 2011 at St. Andrews University in Scotland after an American student, Alexander Hamilton, goaded his classmate, Robert Forbes, into drinking a bottle of wine laced with methanol.

Forbes luckily survived the encounter, but suffered from joint pain, nausea, headaches, balance problems and temporary blindness in the days following. His eyesight has not yet fully returned, according to court documents.

During the encounter, Hilton, from Princeton, Mass., supposedly encouraged Forbes -- and only Forbes -- to drink from the bottle by dropping a coin into it. According to British university tradition, dropping a coin into a bottle compels or dares the drinker to drink all the rest of the contents. Forbes, according to reports, finished the wine bottle by himself, which was mostly full.

"Hilton continuously encouraged [Forbes] to drink from the bottle, but stated that no one else should," the criminal complaint reads.

Hilton was arrested by U.S. authorities under the U.S.-U.K. extradition treaty, and will undergo an extradition hearing March 10. If the hearing concludes that Hilton should be turned over to Scottish authorities, then he will face an attempted murder charge.

Police believe that Hilton planned out the occurrence. They found a plastic funnel and glass measuring cup purchased by Hilton at a local store, as well as computer searches for mixing methanol and ethanol on his computer.

After the alleged attempted murder, Hilton returned to the U.S. and briefly attended a college in New Mexico.
