A man accused of rape and awaiting trial in San Diego reportedly committed suicide while in police custody.

Jason Edward Stey, 27, was pronounced dead on Tuesday night after a guard reportedly found him injured in his cell at Vista Detention Center, reports Fox 5. Police have yet to reveal his injuries or the exact cause of death.

Stey was reportedly arrested last week and charged with raping, beating and choking a smoke-shop clerk at Dab Central Smoke Shop in North County. The victim says she was alone in the shop when Stey entered and assaulted her.

The woman’s dog attempted to protect her at one point, she told police, and the suspect kept him back by punching the animal.

When the victim called 911, police say they could hear sounds of the assault in the background, reports U-T San Diego.

Stey was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

This suicide is the second to take place in jail in the last few weeks. On Dec. 30, 41-year-old Vidal Webb – who was accused of setting his girlfriend on fire in Poway – reportedly jumped to his death from a second-floor walkway in downtown Central Jail. His victim remains hospitalized.
