Alabama boy Aiden Howard was pronounced dead on Sunday after he was struck by a man driving an SUV. The same man had reportedly set a dog on fire.
According to police, Juan Daniels was fighting with a man in an apartment complex in Montgomery. Daniels attempted to run over the man, but instead crashed into the apartment and hit 6-year-old Aiden instead.
Daniels then fled on foot and has remained on the run, police report.
In 2007, Daniels was convicted of beating and setting his mother’s pit bull on fire. After a brief manhunt, the 28-year-old was captured by U.S. Marshals. He admitted to authorities that he’d set the dog on fire because he couldn’t borrow the family car.
The dog had been tethered to a tree and unable to escape the fire, which ripped his skin off. Miraculously, the dog survived the incident.
According to police, a charge for attempted murder had been held against Daniels. In light of Aiden's death, the charge will probably be upgraded.
