Children Found With Severe Burns, Couple Charged With Child Abuse

Police have arrested and charged an Alabama couple with aggravated child abuse after two of the woman’s children were found to have severe burns on their bodies.

Limestone County investigators were called recently to Huntsville Hospital after 22-year-old Amanda Marie Reyer brought her 2-year-old daughter in for care, WHNT News reports. The hospital staff had reportedly found second- and third-degree burns covering 80 percent of the girl’s body.

Deputies who spoke with WHNT said Reyer told hospital employees that the girl fell into a bathtub full of scalding water.

The girl was flown to a Birmingham hospital where she is reported to be in stable condition.

Investigators from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office went to Reyer’s home following the incident. There they found Reyer’s boyfriend, 29-year-old Derrick Defoe, at home watching a 5-year-old boy and an infant.

Authorities told WAFF News the older child was also found to have second- and third-degree burns on his buttocks and legs. He was taken to an area hospital and later flown to Birmingham as well. His condition has not yet been reported.

One neighbor spoke with WAFF News about the incident.

"I was shocked that they'd got burns from scalding water," the woman, identified only as Pam, said, adding that she hoped the children will be OK.

“They need to be with people they love and can honestly take care of them,” she added.

Defoe and Reyer remain in custody, charged with aggravated child abuse. Their bond has not yet been set.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
