A 91-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife of more than 60 years in the Texas retirement home where they both lived. His alleged motive was wanting to end his wife’s pain.
On Dec. 5, Nelson Harvey reportedly shot and killed his 93-year-old wife, Evelyn, who had a terminal illness, reports Inside Edition.
El Paso Police say Nelson reported the death of his wife to custodians at the Monte Vista at Coronado retirement center and gave them the weapon.
Around 8 a.m. on Dec. 6 Nelson told a retirement home worker doing a routine check in on the couple that his wife had “passed away,” but did not offer any specifics, reports the El Paso Times.
Believing Evelyn had died from natural causes in her sleep, the retirement home employee left.
A manager who checked in on Nelson at 11:30 a.m. found Evelyn lying in her bed with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
Nelson, who had been sleeping on the couch in the room at the time, told them his died wife during the course of the night and implied he had killed her because he didn't want her to suffer any longer.
He told court officials he has no immediate relatives and that his only friends at the retirement home are older than 80.
Nelson was booked by El Paso law enforcement on suspicion of murder and was jailed with bail set at $25,000.
