9-Year-Old Boy Handcuffed And Beaten Over Birthday Cake, Say Police

A 9-year-old boy from Hagerstown, Maryland, was handcuffed and then later severely beaten for eating a piece of birthday cake without permission, according to police.

Jack Garcia was found unconscious, unresponsive and not breathing in an apartment on June 30, My Fox DC reported. He is in hospital in critical condition.

He was bruised and had contusions and abrasions all over his body and was allegedly denied medical help earlier that day. A man who was in the apartment at the time of the beating called 911, but Jack’s mother reportedly didn’t allow paramedics to enter the home, telling them that he was simply “congested.”

Emergency services were called again when Jack stopped breathing.

Robert Wilson, the 30-year-old boyfriend of Jack’s mother, has been charged with several offenses including first-degree assault and child abuse in relation to the beating, WTOP reported.

Wilson is being held on $1 million bail at Washington County Detention Center.
