A 17-year-old male from Yakima, Washington has been critically wounded via gunshot wound to the leg, according to local news source KIMA TV.
The 17-year-old, whose name has not yet been disclosed, was shot in the driveway of an area home. Local police were alerted of cries coming from the backyard of the home, which is not the residence of the victim, just after 1:00 am on July 6th.
Upon arriving on the scene, police found out that the situation was much more complicated than they had originally anticipated.
The teen, who was shot in the driveway of the home, was reportedly breaking into a vehicle parked in the driveway of the residence. An 18-year-old male, who was housesitting at the time, went outside to investigate after he heard suspicious sounds coming from the driveway.
Upon seeing the 17-year-old and his accomplice, who has not been identified by authorities, the 18-year-old male went inside to get a rifle that was kept in the home in which he was housesitting. His presence went unnoticed, apparently, as the 17-year-old remained on the property.
The 18-year-old went back outside, again without being noticed and shot the victim in the lower leg with the gun. The other suspect fled the scene, and authorities are still searching for leads as to his whereabouts.
As for the recipient of the gunshot wound, KIMA TV reports, "While the wound is very serious it is not believed to be life threatening."
According to reports, the 18-year-old who shot the victim stayed on the scene until paramedics arrived and was at the residence when police arrived. As of now, the incident is still under investigation, though authorities are not suspicious of the 18 year-old house sitter’s story.
