A 17-year-old girl who attended Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday was sexually assaulted and found brutally beaten Sunday morning near a hotel pool.
The girl, who was also celebrating her birthday, was found lying in a pool of her own blood by the Marriott hotel swimming pool.
The Riverside County girl suffered severe brain bleeding. She traveled to the convention with a trusted older friend.
Her mother, Jill Weyer, said she had no cause for concern about the teen attending Comic-Con. The girl had been texting her regularly while she was gone. But then the communication stopped.
"My daughter was great about checking in all day with me and when I lost contact with her I kept trying to contact her, and I knew something was wrong," Weyer told NBC News.
Harbor Police arrested Justin Kalior, 29, who is believed to have traveled to the convention with the teen. He was accused of sexual contact with a minor and providing a minor with alcohol, but Harbor Police would not confirm that the arrest was connected to the teen’s beating.
Participating in cosplay, the girl was dressed as a female Roger Rabbit on Saturday, with a bright red wig, bunny ears and a small red leotard.
The victim says her memory of that night is “fuzzy.”
Kalior has been released on bail.
