A teenager from Miami, Florida, was sentenced to 28 years behind bars for the murder of his mother.

Kit Darrant, 19, choked his mother and stabbed her 100 times with a butcher knife before he hosted his friends to a house party with the corpse of his mother still in the apartment. The murder took place in March 2012 when Darrant was 16.

Darrant admitted in Miami-Dade court that he had killed his 35-year-old mother, Renette Emile. Darrant then pleaded guilty to violently murdering her and agreed to a 28-year prison sentence, reports Pulse.

“The murder of Rene Emile was tragic and Mr. Darrant publicly apologizes for his actions and the immense pain they have caused others," said his defense attorney Christopher DeCoste, according to NY Daily News. "This deal is equally beneficial to both sides. It allows this young man to repay his debt to society yet still have a second chance at life."

“The man that I am now is not the boy that I used to be. Actions speak louder than words, and I intend to prove that to you,” Darrant reportedly told the judge.

Darrant's family members told police the teen was agitated and killed his mother following an after-school argument. They said he would regularly fight with his mother and would react by taking her car without her permission, smoking marijuana and drinking.

Darrant skipped classes at Dr. Krop High School for a week after the gruesome murder. During the time, he left his mother’s dead body decaying on the bedroom floor. He had covered her with blankets and detergent to mask the corpse's odor. He threw parties in the meantime.

One person who attended the party, along with 60 of Darrant’s classmates, in the apartment after the murder complained of the smell. Darrant said it was probably the trash.

Darrant even cared after his 3-year-old brother until his aunt came by the home and found Emile’s body.

Court documents indicate that Darrant suffered from mental illness. He once spent time in a psychiatric hospital after he jumped out of a moving car and dared oncoming traffic to hit him, reports CBS News.
