A 13-year-old boy in Camden, New Jersey was shot and killed on the night of Jan. 7.  A 16-year-old girl who was a suspect in the case has turned herself in, according to authorities.

Nathaniel "Nate" Plummer Jr. was reportedly gunned down near his home in the eastern part of the city at 11:15 p.m., The Courier-Post reports.  His mother, Taisha Mercado, says she believes he was going to his grandmother's house in the same neighborhood, when she heard the gunshots which took her son's life.

In an interview with The Courier-Post, Mercado said she was initially told by police that the victim of the nearby shooting was a female, but worried when her son had still not arrived.  Officers returned to her home later in the evening and took her to a nearby hospital where Nate was taken.

Mercado, a certified nurses' assistant, told The Courier-Post she knew her son was gone when she was led out of the emergency room and met by a doctor, a nurse and a priest.

A 16-year-old girl who was suspected of killing Plummer reportedly turned herself into authorities the following weekend, Philly.com reports.

Camden County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Andy McNeil and Camden County Police spokesman Dan Keashen confirmed the girl had surrendered early on Jan. 9, but said it was in connection with a separate Oct. 30 shooting and declined to comment on any connection with Plummer's death.

The girl is a suspect in various crimes in the city, according to a law enforcement source quoted by Philly.com.  She reportedly turned herself in while accompanied by her mother, possibly due to the fact that her name and photograph were being circulated on social media after Plummer's slaying.

"His birthday is the 19th," said Mercado of her son. "He would've been 14."

"My baby didn't even get to his birthday. He didn't deserve this. He was just a baby. It's not fair, it's not fair."

Plummer is the first homicide victim in Camden in 2016, and is the first minor killed in the city since April 2014.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
