14-Year-Old Indiana Rape Victim Shamed by Town
An unnamed 14-year-old rape victim, who is eight months pregnant, said she can no longer leave her Elwood, Ind., home without being publicly shamed.
People reportedly continue to vandalize the girl’s home grafitying the words “slut” and “whore” on the garage door. The eighth grader added that her friends have also stopped taking her calls, resulting in her isolation.
“I used to have a lot of friends, or people I thought were my friends,” she said.
According to ThinkProgress, the young girl said her neighborhood perceives her pregnancy as the result of promiscuous behavior, but they do not know the story of the 17-year-old boy who overpowered her.
The boy, who will be prosecuted on Tuesday, and the story of his alleged attack on the 14-year-old girl are concealed according to Indiana law in regards to minors. The boy was also accused of assaulting two other girls, one who was 12 at the time.
While the boy could have been tried as an adult, the Indiana court decided against it, though the reason for their decision is unknown. If charged as an adult, the boy could have faced more than 20 years in prison.
Kristy Green, the girl’s mother, said she fears the boy only receive probation, though the prosecutor is recommending he be sent to the Indiana Department of Correction. Green also voiced her outrage as the boy’s freedom, as he was never taken into custody.
"He’s been out the whole time, going on with his life like nothing happened,” Green said. “But my daughter’s life will never be the same.”
