A 54-year-old Massachusetts man has been arrested and charged for impregnating a 12-year-old girl, according to

Elbert Richardson, of Brockton, MA, pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated rape of a child and indecent assault on a child under 14. Richardson had been arraigned only a few days earlier on similar charges.

The victim, an apparent acquaintance of Richardson, went to the hospital in need of medical attention and it was there she discovered that she was eight months pregnant. Authorities say that she was unaware of her pregnancy prior to the hospital visit. The girl was reportedly raped in April, and after learning that she was 32 weeks pregnant she told police that Richardson was the father. It was revealed through witness testimony that Richardson also raped the teen this past August.

Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham says that the witness “indicated to the officers that the defendant called her. He was upset, he was crying. He told her that he had done something that he was ashamed of. He admitted to her that something did happen with the victim, that there was an incident where they had sex. He denied that he thought the baby was his.”

The witness reportedly told Richardson’s wife that she noticed changes in the victim’s physical appearance, but the wife claimed that there was nothing wrong. When word spread that the victim was pregnant, Richardson’s wife told the witness that a “13-year-old boy down the street” impregnated her.

Richardson’s wife has defended her husband, saying that the allegations are false and that she has never witnessed him sexually abuing anyone. Richardson is being held without bail until a hearing on December 10th.

“We’re going to get DNA and the DNA is going to decide whether this young lady is telling the truth or whether the defendant is telling the truth. It’s one of those situations that does have a very permanent resolution to it,” Judge Ronald Moynahan said. “It’s not going to be a, ‘He said, she said’ once that DNA comes back.”
