Out of respect to the Orlando, Florida, shooting victims and their loved ones, the Orange County Medical Examiner’s office reportedly kept the body of killer Omar Mateen separated from the bodies of his victims.
Dr. Joshua Stephany, Chief Medical Examiner, explained in the following statement, as reported by the Independent Journal Review:
The Pulse shooter was transported separately from the scene. His remains are being held in a separate building at the ME facility. The shooter’s autopsy was also conducted in another building, away from the victims. This is not a law or requirement, but was rather done out of respect for the victims and their families so that the shooter may never be near the 49 beautiful souls again.
At the request of the FBI, Mateen’s autopsy results and the identity of who claimed his body is not being revealed, the Wall Street Journal reports.
At least one funeral home and cemetery near Mateen’s home has said that it will not accept Mateen’s remains.
Dignity Memorial. a national funeral and cremation chain, which has been serving Muslims for decades, has also announced that it will refuse to take the shooter's body.
In a statement, the company said, according to the Wall Street Journal: "Out of respect for our client families and our grieving community, no Dignity Memorial location will be providing funeral or burial services for Omar Mateen, the identified gunman in the Orlando tragedy."
