A 9-year-old girl surprised Detroit police officers by bringing them lunch on her birthday.
Samya McLaughlin was celebrating her birthday in July, but instead of receiving presents, she decided to give. The 9-year-old bagged lunches for police officers at Detroit’s 11th Precinct, WWJ reported.
“I was thinking that I should feed the police officers because I wanted to show them that I support them and I thank them for all that they do,” Samya told WWJ. “I wanted to show them that all lives matter.”
The bagged lunches included sandwiches, fruit, chips and a cookie. Samya paid for the food with her own birthday money. She came up with the idea after learning about the police shootings in Dallas that took the lives of officers Michael Krol, Lorne Ahrens, Brent Thompson, Michael J. Smith, and Patrick Zamarripa.

With tensions between officers and civilians running high, Samya decided to do something for the officers in her own community to let them know they are appreciated.
“We discuss things that’s going on,” Samya’s mother told the news station. “I always ask her how she feels about it.”
The Detroit police officers returned the favor. They made Samya the "Officer of the Day," and gave her gifts as a thank you for her special tribute.
