Convicted cop killer Ronell Wilson has asked that his upcoming re-sentencing not be held on Fridays so that he can attend Muslim prayer services in jail. His lawyer made the request. Brooklyn Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis did not immediately rule on the demand. According to The Daily News the judge noted that accommodating Wilson’s wishes would probably extend the resentencing this spring from four weeks to six weeks.
Wilson carried out execution-style slayings of NYPD undercover detectives Rodney Andrews and James Nemorin on Staten Island during a gun bust that got out of control. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 2007.
Wilson, 30, found religion several years ago in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Interestingly enough, he also had sexual contact with a girlfriend and impregnated a federal prison guard while being detained there.
The prison guard, Nancy Gonzalez, is due to give birth to Wilson’s son later this month. She was arraigned on a charge of having unlawful sex with an inmate. She also recently tested positive for cocaine.
Wilson killed Andrews and Nemorin in 2003. During his first trial in 2007, a friend testified that Wilson wrote him a letter expressing his desire to have a child. “I just need a baby before the pigz try to take my life. I need to have something behind,” wrote Wilson. Wilson’s original death sentence was overturned, which is the reason he is going back on trial.
