Colorado Woman Breastfeeds Puppy

When the mother of a 15-month-old child found a puppy she feared was near death, she did the only thing she could think of to save its life: she breastfed it.

The puppy was the runt of an abandoned litter of lab-mix puppies.

The woman said that the puppy wouldn’t eat from a bottle or K-9 formula. Unable to simply sit and watch the animal die, she took action.

“I just felt like he just had an hour left. That’s how weak he was,” the woman said. “He wasn’t moving and I just did it.”

Afterwards, she posted a picture of the session on Facebook (below), and followed it up with an explanation of her actions. As the photo began to spread across the internet, reviews started coming in – some commending the act of compassion, others claiming she crossed the line.

Veterinarian Dr. Amber Williams said that she doesn’t recommend breastfeeding a puppy, mentioning that she’s “concerned about zoonotic diseases because there are things that can be passed from puppies to babies.”

Fortunately, the woman no longer breastfeeds her child, which eliminates that particular concern.

“Also,” Williams added, “human milk just isn’t the best for puppies.” While it might be a good solution in an emergency situation, it’s important to get a puppy on a K-9 formula to help it grow appropriately.

The puppy has been named Tubbs, and is now eating formula from a bottle.

The woman, who remains unnamed for fear of backlash caused by the “taboo” action, admits that she herself saw the process as socially questionable before she did it.

“I never thought I would ever do that, it was taboo to me as well,” she said.
