Chinese Newborn Rescued After Mother Flushes Him Down Toilet

| by Emily Smith

A newborn baby miraculously survived after his mother gave birth and then flushed him down the toilet.

The boy, nicknamed Xiaoxiao or “teeny tiny,” was rescued from a sewer in the Shaanxi Province of China after a passerby heard him crying. The man called emergency services, who found the boy lying in a pool of filthy water.

“It was really a race against time because somebody could have flushed something down the sewer again at any stage,” Suide County fire department squad leader Li Zhi said. “The baby might have turned over and ended up face first in the filthy water and drowned.”

Zhi said the team didn’t want to smash the pipe the boy was trapped in because he could have been further injured. Instead, emergency responders used a “mixture of tools” to pull him from the sewer.

“He still had the umbilical cord attached and it had obviously been clumsily cut,” Zhi said.

The newborn boy was rushed to a hospital where he was cleaned and fed. Since Xiaoxiao had somehow survived with only a few scratches, further medical care was not required. Now, doctors say the baby boy is perfectly healthy and they don’t expect him to suffer any further consequences.

“The child survived the ordeal surprisingly unscathed,” physician Li Zhiping said. “I can’t think of any similar cases where a child survived being effectively flushed down the toilet.”

Members of the fire department have volunteered to be the boy’s temporary parents while police search for his birth mother. If the mother is found, it’s possible that she will face charges of child abuse and neglect.

Police reported that this isn’t the first time an unwanted child has been abandoned in such a way.
