A Chinese father became furious when he caught his son skipping school for several days, so he stripped the boy to his underwear in front of a crowd, tied him to a tree and whipped him.

The boy, 9, from Nanchong, in southwest China's Sichuan Province was playing truant and also did not return home the night before.

In the morning, the father discovered his walking on the street. The boy tried to run, but his father managed to grab the boy, strip him, tie him to the tree and gave him a beating.

Lin Gang, who took a photo of the scene, said the temperature was about 40 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) when the child was disciplined.

A crowd gathered around, but with some interference and persuasion, the father soon stopped and took him away.

According to the Daily Mail, corporal punishment of the kind administered to the Nanchong boy is authorized in the country, but there are law provisions to prevent excessive child abuse.

In China, the father’s “strict discipline” is a welcomed example of what parents should do to their children if they misbehave.

“Many traditional Chinese families use corporal punishment to teach their children,” Melody Koo, a student at Marknoll Fathers’ School, wrote in a letter to the South China Morning Post. “They believe that once the pain is over, the lesson will be engraved on the child's mind and the mistake will not be repeated. It's an easy way of "teaching" children right from wrong.”

The Global Initiative to End Corporal Punishment referred to a 2010 study, which notes that half of girls and three in five boys in China went through “mild” corporal punishment in the past month, including spanking, hitting or slapping.

A further 10 percent of girls and 15 percent of boys reported experiencing extreme corporal punishment. This includes hitting or slapping on the face, head, or ears or being repeatedly beaten with an implement.
